*1973, St. Petersburg, Russia
Maria and Natalia Petschatnikov transform familiar everyday objects of banality into installation works or paintings to reflect important ideas. Embedded with humour and irony, these works of art often challenge viewers to reassess how these objects mirror our values and lifestyle in a globalising world. The Petschatnikov twins also deal with the themes of science, communication, and technology in their work. The classical art training the sisters received from different world-class institutions, including the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the Russian Academy of Art in St. Petersburg, play an influential role in how they synthesize new approaches to the traditional canons of oil painting.
