Josef Schulz

*1966, Bischofsburg, Poland

Through his work, Josef Schulz demonstrates the existing tension between reality and manipulation. His training under a famous photographer, Thomas Ruff, introduced him to the traditions of the Becher school, which influenced many of his series, including centre commercial, sachliches, and formen. Schulz digitally manipulated the photos of these series in order to produce architectural clarity. However, the photos of übergang, Schulz’s famed series depicting border stations, explore reality on a different level. Border stations are often set up on a continuous road, marking the invisible division between two nations and manipulating a traveller’s transitional experience from one point of the journey to the next. This is the reality Schulz captures in this series.
