Eva Lauterlein’s portraits challenge the traditional convention for portraiture. Instead of trying to capture the exact likeness of the sitter, Lauterlein uses different technical and visual approaches to combining different pictures into one portrait. The portraits of the Chimères series, for instance, are accomplished by taking photos of a sitter from multiple perspectives and then morphing them into one portrait. The result is disconcerting portraits with facial expressions difficult to read, making viewers question reality and our perception of photographic portraits. Lauterlein’s cubistic approach to portraiture can also be understood as a commentary on the extensive makeover fashion magazines and newspapers do on portraits that people willingly perceive as reality.
